Deanery News September – October 2017

Standing Committee Meeting

The Standing Committee met on 11 September; discussions were held on the current vacancy position(see below), Parish Share and the next Deanery Synod meeting to be held in October.

Licensing of Michael Brandsma

On 11 October at St Mary’s Atherstone, Revd. Bishop Christopher licensed Michael Brandsma, who had been serving as Curate in Charge, as Priest in Charge of St Mary's.

Michael was welcomed after his licensing by civil dignitaries and community representatives as well as a large congregation from the church and the town with which Michael has formed close links.

Deanery Synod

The Deanery Synod meeting was held on 12 October at St Mary & St John Camp Hill, the first time a synod meeting had been held there for several years.

Heather Barnes, Assistant Area Dean opened the meeting then Revd. Tom Wintle, Curate in Charge, welcomed the synod and gave a background of the church and what was happening there.

The speaker for the evening was Revd. Simon Betteridge, Lead Chaplain and Bereavement Service Manager at University Hospitals, Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust.
Simon spoke to the meeting about Holistic Healing and the importance of giving someone in need a voice.

Standing Committee Meeting

On 23 October, an additional meeting of the standing committee had been arranged to discuss the allocation of the Deanery Share to parishes.

The Deanery was facing a 7% increase in its share mainly due to a decrease in fees for funerals, weddings etc.

The current vacancies in the deanery were discussed and it was agreed that the posts at Mancetter and Ansley & Arley could both be reduced to half time posts; with a few other adjustments, this meant that the overall increase was just over 1.6% so the parish shares were allocated with relative ease!

Deanery Vacancies

Three parishes remain in interregnum, Ansley & Arley, Bedworth and Mancetter.

Although Bedworth interviewed on 14 September, an appointment was not made.

The situation at Bedworth is further complicated by the fact that Revd. Martin Hammond who had been working half time as a hospital chaplain has decided to go full time as a chaplain some time in 2018.

Archdeacon Pastor

Following the appointment of Revd. Clive Hogger as acting Archdeacon, Bishop Christopher announced the appointment of Revd. Canon Sue Field as Archdeacon Pastor.

Sue has recently completed seven months as Acting Archdeacon of Loughborough during a vacancy.
